De-clutter and sweep out stress

Get the most out of your home with some simple organization tips

Do you often spend hours looking for things? Have you ever discovered a box full of items that you haven't looked at, or needed, in years? Do you avoid certain remote corners of your home or garage because you just can't deal with the mess? Are you moving in the next few weeks and want to avoid moving carloads of stuff you don't need? If you answered yes to any of these questions, don't stress out, the steps below will help you reach junk-free nirvana.

Sort and separate

The first step is the most difficult and time-consuming – sort through the mess. Go through your junk drawers, garage and storerooms - everywhere your clutter accumulates – and gather all your odds and ends in one place. Then start the (heartbreaking) sorting phase by asking yourself what you really need to keep and what can be given away, recycled or thrown out and separate it into three categories: a) stuff you certainly don't need anymore; b) stuff you absolutely need to keep and store and c) useful stuff that you forgot you had and that you can start using again.

Store

Now that you know what items you want to keep, store them in suitable containers that you've clearly marked with a label. This is where a good electronic labeller comes in. Electronic label makers date back more than 20 years to when Brother introduced their popular P-touch brand. Today, they can be purchased in most office supply stores, or online at websites like www.brother.ca.

“Our P-touch labellers are ideal for on-the-go needs, so users just type, print, peel, and stick long-lasting laminated labels in seconds,” says Brian Caldwell, Senior Product Manager at Brother Canada. “They are a quick, convenient and easy-to-use solution to get organized. Brother's durable patented tapes are available in various colours and sizes, up to 36 mm, and you can use colour coding to organize multiple storage boxes. Plus they are tested to the extreme, so they can move from freezer to microwave to dishwasher; without ever peeling or fading.”

However you do it, creating a system that works for you will make it that much easier to stick to.

Sell or donate

If you're like most people, you'll be left with all sorts of things you just don't need. Here are some ideas to get rid of your valuable stuff, even with a profit. Now's the time to gather all items you want to sell, take a picture of each and post them on one of those free online classified ad websites. Who knows, that extra money might get you that little something you couldn't otherwise afford. Everything that is left over can be offered to your friends and relatives – you could be surprised! – or donated to a local charity, the Salvation Army or your local thrift shop.

Nothing against yoga, massage or long walks in the park, but if you really want to de-stress, de-clutter: nothing clears the mind like clearing the pile of junk that has accumulated in your house! (NC)
